Melchizedek (from Hebrew מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק melech-i-tzédek, literally "righteousness is my king") is an enigmatic figure twice mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament. Melchizedek is mentioned as the King of Salem, and priest of God Most High, in the time of the biblical patriarch Abram. He brought out bread and wine, blessed Abram, and received tithes from him, Genesis 14:18-20. Reference is made to him in Psalm 110:4 where the victorious ruler is declared to be "priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." He is commemorated as one of the Holy Forefathers in the Calendar of Saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church on July 26. He is mentioned in the Roman Canon, the First Eucharistic Prayer of the Roman rite, and also figures in the current Roman Martyrology, or Martyrologium Romanum as a commemoration on August 26. Well biblically speaking, The name Melchizedek occurs just twice in the Hebrew Bible, once in the Book of Genesis and once in the Psalms. In Genesis 14:18, Melchizedek brought bread and wine to Abram after Abram's victory over the four kings (led by Chedorlaomer) who had overrun Sodom and Gomorrah and had taken Abram's nephew Lot prisoner. He blessed Abram in the name of El Elyon. Then he gave him a tenth of everything (a translation which preserves the ambiguity of the original). In the second reference, Psalms 110:4, we find the statement: Thou art a priest for ever after the manner of Melchizedek. Generally a pretty cool dude.
